Orchards shift east, and sprayers learn to aim deeper
Climate change is redrawing the map of European fruit growing, and Poland unexpectedly finds itself among the beneficiaries of this shift. At the same time, machinery manufacturers aren't sitting idle — a new sprayer from China shows how orchardists can better care for their growing apple acreage. Here's what caught our attention this week.
01 · Climate and Crops
Climate is pushing European orchards east and north [1]
A report cited by FreshFruitPortal (based on a Rabobank analysis) paints a picture of a fruit industry that must redraw its investment map [1]. This is no longer a story about isolated crop failures, but about the systematic erosion of predictability - of yields, quality, and harvest timing. Stone fruit trees are suffering from increasingly insufficient winter "chill" needed for proper development, while pome fruit trees are blooming as much as 10-15 days earlier than just recently, which directly translates into a higher risk of spring frosts.
The scale of the problem is already visible in the numbers: citrus production in Spain, which still accounts for the majority of the EU's harvest of this fruit, fell by more than 10 percent in 2023-2025 compared to 2013-2015, and EU apple production shrank by 11 percent in 2024 precisely because of frosts. At the same time, the central-eastern region - led by Poland, Serbia, and Slovakia - is gaining appeal for new apple plantings. The reason is straightforward: more stable winters and lower production costs mean that new investments are being made precisely here, although the industry notes that financing such projects still often remains the main brake on adaptation.
For Polish orchardists, this is a double signal - on one hand, confirmation that our region may become one of the climatic "winners" of European fruit growing, and on the other, a reminder that the growing scale of plantings also requires investment in equipment that will allow for effective management of larger and more densely planted orchards.
02 · Orchard Machinery
China's SENYTA aims deeper into the tree canopy [2]
Given the growing pressure for more efficient orchard management, it's worth taking a look at equipment news - and there was no shortage of it this week. Chinese company SENYTA unveiled an orchard sprayer that combines classic liquid spraying with airstream assistance [2]. This solution is designed to deliver liquid droplets deeper between branches and leaves, in places where traditional sprayers often lose effectiveness, especially in denser, well-developed canopies.
The machine offers two-sided spraying in a single pass, with a working width of up to 16 meters, which in practice means fewer passes between rows. The manufacturer also emphasizes the equipment's mobility - the sprayer handles slopes of up to 30 degrees and is powered by a 48V/40Ah system. Two tank options are available: 120 and 280 liters, allowing the machine to be matched to both smaller, harder-to-reach plots and larger, more regular plantations. The compact design, in turn, is meant to make work easier on uneven, hilly terrain - precisely where, according to the climate trend described above, new plantings in Central Europe may be established.

See you at FRUIT POLAND
This week showed two sides of the same coin: a changing climate is shifting the center of gravity of European fruit growing toward our region, while machinery manufacturers are responding with equipment designed to help manage growing and increasingly demanding orchards more effectively. If you'd like to see the latest orchard solutions live and talk about how to prepare your farm for climate change, join us at the FRUIT POLAND International Fruit Growing Fair - this is exactly where fruit producers, technology suppliers, and industry experts from across Europe come together.
